Popocatepetl is an active stratovolcano. Situated on the borders of the states of Morelos, Puebla and Mexico, in Central Mexico, it is located about 70 km southeast of Mexico City. Its name means "smoky mountain" in several languages, for example in Nahuatl, it is part of the Izta-Popo Zoquiapan National Park. Its summit reaches an altitude of 5426 meters and is the second highest in Mexico, after Pico de Orizaba.
It is connected to the Iztaccihuatl volcano by a mountain pass called Paso de Cortés.
