Oregon - Burrowing Owls

Live burrowing owls at a conservation site in Oregon

This live camera shows burrowing owl nests in north-central Oregon, on a former U.S. Army weapons depot now being restored as wildlife habitat in collaboration with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, who named the land Papuunmí Tanawtpamá Tičám, "Home of the Burrowing Owl". A network of artificial burrows built from repurposed materials has helped recover a declining population: from just 3 or 4 breeding pairs in the early 2000s to more than 100 nesting pairs and over 400 chicks banded in 2024 alone. Burrowing owls live in dry, open areas, are usually seen on the ground, have distinctive white eyebrows and long legs, and feed mainly on insects and small rodents. A stream from the explore.org network, in partnership with the Owl Research Institute.
