This live camera is based at the headquarters of OrcaLab, a nonprofit whale research station on Hanson Island in British Columbia's Johnstone Strait, at Blackfish Sound, Canada. It is part of a network of remote cameras in an area where more than 150 orcas spend the summer months, and Northern Resident orca families have visited since before studies began over five decades ago. Besides orcas, the camera captures humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, eagles and the rugged scenery of the Canadian coast. Orcas are mammals, the largest members of the dolphin family, between 23 and 32 feet long and weighing up to 6 tons; despite the name "killer whale", they are not dangerous to humans. Summer is the best time to see them; the rest of the year the stream shows the sea and the scenery of the strait. A stream from the explore.org network, in partnership with OrcaLab.
