NHK WORLD-JAPAN is the international service of NHK, Japan's public broadcaster, based in Tokyo. Its television channel runs entirely in English, mixing news and current affairs with Japanese culture, travel, food, technology and lifestyle. NHK Newsline brings hourly updates on world events, business and global weather, while NHK News 7, NHK's nightly domestic newscast, airs with simultaneous English interpretation.
Well-known programmes include Japanology Plus, in which Peter Barakan explores Japanese culture and customs; Cool Japan, which looks at what foreigners living in Japan find cool about the country; J-Melo, hosted by singer May J. and devoted to Japanese music from pop to jazz; Somewhere Street, a walking tour of a different city in every episode; and Biz Stream, the weekly business round-up.
The channel launched on 1 April 1998 as NHK World and took the name NHK World-Japan in 2018. In September 2026 it began broadcasting from the new news building at the NHK Broadcasting Center. For anyone curious about Japan, planning a trip or learning about its culture, it is the country's own window on the world.
