SBT, short for Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão, is the national network founded by the TV host and businessman Silvio Santos on 19 August 1981, using channels that had belonged to the defunct Rede Tupi. Its headquarters, the Complexo GSS, are in Osasco, in greater São Paulo, and the network is now run by the Abravanel family.
The schedule is popular and varied: studio audience shows such as Programa Silvio Santos, Programa do Ratinho, Domingo Legal and the quiz Roda a Roda, Danilo Gentili's late-night talk show The Noite, and the long-running sketch comedy A Praça é Nossa. News comes from Primeiro Impacto, SBT Notícias and SBT Brasil, and football from SBT Sports.
SBT is also famous for Mexican telenovelas such as Marimar and Marisol, and for Chaves, the Brazilian dub of El Chavo del Ocho, still on air decades later. Reality formats like Bake Off Brasil and Esquadrão da Moda round out a lineup that has kept SBT among Brazil's most watched networks. All programmes are in Portuguese.
