MNCTV initially used the name TPI. TPI was founded in Jakarta in 1990 as a company engaged in television broadcasting services in Indonesia. TPI is the third private company to obtain a television broadcasting license on August 1, 1990, and the first television station to receive a national broadcasting license.
TPI started commercial operations on January 23, 1991. And in July 2006, Media Nusantara Citra (MNC) acquired 75% of TPI's shares. Since then, TPI has officially joined as one of the television stations managed by MNC, which is also the parent company of RCTI and Global TV.
